]]>Richmond, Virginia, USA – On behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre today participated in a plaque dedication at the Virginia War Memorial to honour 13 Virginians killed while serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War.
“It is a great honour to be here, both as a Royal Canadian Air Force Veteran and on behalf of the Government of Canada, to pay tribute to these young men who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Second World War serving in the cause of peace and freedom,” said MP Hawn. “This plaque is a lasting reminder of their remarkable courage and service.”
The names of the 13 Virginians are engraved on a plaque made from some of the metal recovered from a missing RCAF bomber that was found in Belgium long after the war. It is the same metal used in the new Bomber Command Memorial in London, England, which honours all members of the Bomber Command from Allied countries and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
These 13 servicemen were among a contingent of approximately 9,000 Americans who joined the RCAF prior to the formal entry of the United States into the Second World War.
