Dear Constituents,
As you know, a Royal Proclamation has named Friday May 9, 2014 as a National Day of Honour in Canada in honour of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, airwomen, police and civilian personnel who served our country in Afghanistan. Canada’s mission in Afghanistan lasted more than 12 years, and more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces personnel, police and civilians served with distinction, honour and courage. They deserve no less than this.
I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you of the community event for the National Day of Honour that I will be attending in Edmonton. This commemoration event will be taking place at the Lecture Training Facility Drill Hall at CFB Edmonton. I am privileged to have the opportunity to speak at this ceremony and share my thoughts and reflections on Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. This ceremony will begin at 10:30am MDT and the public is welcome on a first come, first served seating basis.
If you are not able to attend this particular event, I encourage you, wherever you are at 11:30am MDT/1:30pm EDT to pause for two minutes and remember. Remember the enormous sacrifices born by the more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces personnel, police and civilians that served in Afghanistan and the 158 military personnel and five civilians who died there.

Sincerely,
Hon. Laurie Hawn, PC, CD, MP
