Edmonton, AB – Today, the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for the Glenora Community League Gym under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).
“Our Government is committed to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity in our communities,” said MP Hawn. “By improving facilities such as the Glenora Community League Gym, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a high quality of life for Canadians.”
Federal funding of $19,940 will assist with renovations to the Glenora Community League Gym, which has provided recreational programming to the community for almost 50 years. Interior upgrades to the windows, flooring and scoreboard in the gymnasium will extend the lifespan of this facility.
“Fostering healthy neighbourhoods is a priority for the City of Edmonton and we appreciate the federal government’s contribution to revitalizing this important community resource,” said Ward Councillor Jane Batty. “These renovations will ensure the Glenora Community League remains a functional, thriving facility for present and future residents to enjoy.”
“This is an essential facility for our neighbourhood,” said Beth Sanders, President of the Glenora Community League. “This is our gathering place, where we convene for play and recreation, but also where we meet each other socially to build a resilient community. For young and old, this is the heart of our neighbourhood.”
CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.
Since 2006, the Canadian Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
