Love me? Hate me? Beat me!

Edmonton, AB – Today the Hon. Laurie Hawn, PC, CD, MP for Edmonton Centre took part in the HIV/AIDS Media Launch for the upcoming Edmonton Scotiabank Aids Walk for Life and issued a challenge to all Edmontonians of “Love me? Hate me? Beat me!”

For the past 7 years, MP Hawn has participated in the walk, and for the past 6 years has been the leading fundraiser for the event. In an effort to raise funds and awareness, MP Hawn has challenged the citizens of the city to out-fundraise him this year, or ‘beat him’.

“Whether you love me or hate me, this is the type of event that can bring people together for a common cause, and helps raise much-needed funds to help folks battling HIV/AIDS right here in Edmonton,” said MP Hawn.

On Sunday, September 23rd, Edmontonians will take part in a 5km non-athletic walk to help raise funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS programs, services and education. All money raised will stay in Edmonton to help those living with the disease. The goal is to get to zero: zero new transmissions, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

“While HIV/AIDS continues to rob some Edmontonians of their quality of life, a cure for this terrible disease is possible. We will continue striving to help improve the lives of the individuals and their families dealing with this disease,” said MP Hawn.

This year will mark the 21st annual Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life in Edmonton. On event day, participants will turn in their pledges and walk the 5km course.  Event day also includes a pancake breakfast, a post-walk concert and fun for the whole family.

Each year the top 3 fundraisers are awarded major prizes, with this year’s top prize being a trip for two to Beijing to participate in the first ever AIDS Walk for Life on the Great Wall of China. Although MP Hawn has won the top prize for each of the last 6 years, he has not accepted it. Instead he has handed the prize over to the next highest fundraiser to enjoy.

“This isn’t about prizes or pomp; this is about trying to do what each of us can to help people. HIV Edmonton is a fantastic organization that helps many individuals in need. If we can all just chip in a little, together we can make a huge difference for Edmontonians battling HIV/AIDS. I am happy to be a small part of a much bigger task,” concluded MP Hawn.
