EDMONTON, AB – On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament (Edmonton Centre) and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, today announced funding for the Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta (ATAA) Society.
This funding will contribute to the ATAA’s Showcase 2011, which will be held in Edmonton from October 16 to 18. This annual marketing, performance, and networking event brings together artists, presenters, agents, and other showcase organizers from across Canada to facilitate the development and growth of touring arts performance in Alberta. The funding will also support the ATAA’s Directory for online booking, which will offer publications, workshops, and marketing tools.
“Our Government recognizes the importance of arts and culture to the quality of life of Canadians,” said Minister Moore. “The Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta contributes greatly to the province’s cultural scene by making performances accessible for all Albertans.”
“This annual gathering of a cross-section of Alberta’s performing arts sector expands the diversity of artistic experiences available to everyone,” said Mr. Hawn. “The Government of Canada is pleased to support this important marketing and networking showcase.”
“The assistance provided by Canadian Heritage in strengthening the performing arts touring circuit throughout Alberta has been invaluable,” said Brenda O’Donnell, Executive Director of the Arts Touring Alliance. “The financial support provided over the past eight years is now allowing our sector to emerge as a mature evolving network that is nurturing new audiences in remote areas and encouraging the development of artists. We are very grateful for this support.”
The Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta Society is dedicated to the maintenance, development, and growth of a strong touring arts industry in Alberta through networking opportunities, access to professional development services, and programs that promote and nurture all aspects of arts touring. Through their annual three-day Showcase and ongoing publishing and Web initiatives, the organization seeks to make touring arts performances accessible for all Albertans, both urban and rural.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $65,000 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada’s culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
