Hon. Laurie Hawn Celebrates the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Celebration of King’s University College

Edmonton – Today, the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence, was on hand at King’s University College to celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, marking the completion of renovations to the student services area. This is comprised of enrolment, registry and student life, as well as the new learning spaces in the library, classrooms and lab facilities in the science wing.

The project received a Government of Canada investment of $947, 500 through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP).

“Our Government is investing in research and training facilities at campuses across the country to create jobs, help our economy recover quickly, and improve the quality of life for Canadians” said Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre.

As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada introduced the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, a two-year, $2-billion economic stimulus measure to maintain and improve research and training facilities in Canadian universities, colleges and CEGEP’s. The program is providing economic stimulus, creating jobs, and generating the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canadian institutions at the forefront of scientific advancement and ensure economic growth in the future.

“We are ensuring that Canada’s universities and colleges can continue to train the highly skilled researchers and workers of the future, for the benefit of all Canadians” said Edmonton Centre MP Laurie Hawn.

The KIP project at King’s provides an integrated plan to upgrade infrastructure in support of faculty and student research opportunities, knowledge development and enhanced student success, and covers three areas; Science Research Facilities, Enhancement of Information Technology, and Upgrade/Renovation of Central Facility. Each of these areas has several components all of which will enhance the research and learning experience for students, enabling King’s to take a major step forward in its knowledge development and research capacity.

“King’s University College plays a vital role in the Edmonton community and the completion of this project will help ensure that this role continues,” said Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence.
